I know it’s still very early (the ‘08/’09 NCAA and NBA seasons have yet to tip-off), but I’m sure the Suns are already thinking about what kind of personnel they will need to acquire after this season – both through the draft and in free agency. Here are some thoughts on what I believe the Suns may be targeting. What will they need?First and foremost, the Suns will need a Forward. Grant Hill, Matt Barnes and Louis Amundson are all free agents in 2009 (Amundson is restricted, Hill and Barnes are unrestricted). Hill will probably call it a career, so the team will need to figure out if they want to try to resign the other two. Plus, Amare Stoudemire will be an unrestricted free agent in 2010 and he’ll be looking for a huge payday. That leaves the team with Robin Lopez (who can play Forward when needed), Alando Tucker and Boris Diaw. Second, the Suns will need a Guard. We hope that Goran Dragic will be able to replace Steve Nash, who is an unrestricted free agent in 2010, but Sean Singletary will be a restricted free agent in 2009 and Raja Bell will be an unrestricted free agent in 2010 (along with Nash). If they are unable (or unwilling) to resign Bell, that leaves the team with Leandro Barbosa and Goran Dragic, and no Shooting Guard. Who is available? From a draft perspective, the players that appear to be the top preliminary draft choices at the SF and SG positions for 2009 include Demar DeRozan, (SG, USC), James Harden (SG, Arizona State), Earl Clark (SF, Louisville), and Austin Daye (SF, Gonzaga). Depending on where the Suns draft, many or all of these guys might be gone already. But a sign and trade of an exiting free-agent-to-be for a higher draft pick could land them one of these top prospects. There is also a lot of talent out there internationally. From a free agent perspective, the following players will be unrestricted free agents and are probably along the lines of what the Suns would be looking for (30 years old and younger, salary between $1MM-$5MM per year):· Devin Brown (SF, New Orleans)· Gerald Green (SF, Dallas)· Jarvis Hayes (SF, New Jersey)· Kyle Korver (SF, Utah)· Trenton Hassell (SF, New Jersey)· Trevor Ariza (SF, LA Lakers)· Damien Wilkins (SG, Oklahoma City)· Keith Bogans (SG, Orlando) They will have about $6MM off the books if they don’t resign Amundson, Singletary, Barnes, and Hill, which means they won’t have the money to after the big-dollar free agents such as Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson, Wally Szczerbiak, Richard Hamilton, Darius Miles, Quentin Richardson, Jamal Crawford, Ron Artest, Ricky Davis, Hedo Turkoglu, Marquis Daniels, Bobby Jackson, or Desmond Mason. What could be interesting is a guy like Devean George (PF, Dallas). They could get him for around $3MM per year, and the other $3MM that will have just came off the books could be used to bring in someone like Damien Wilkins or Keith Bogans, or go with a couple of lower cost options at SF like Devin Brown (New Orleans), Gerald Green (Dallas), Jarvis Hayes (New Jersey), Kyle Korver (Utah), Trenton Hassell (New Jersey), or Trevor Ariza (LA Lakers). What should they do?If Matt Barnes lives up to the expectations, I would say try to resign him. If he doesn’t live up (or he just gets too expensive), I would go after Devean George. There won’t be much out there in terms of free-agents at the SG position, so I would try to get something in the draft (ASU’s James Harden would be nice) and hope that he can learn to play defense by backing up Raja Bell (who will be too old & expensive to want to resign in 2010).

Continue reading "Early Thoughts on the 2009 Off Season"
